How tipping works in the UK

Tipping in UK restaurants is optional but customary for good service. The conventional range is 10 to 12.5 percent for table service, 15 percent for excellent service at a smart restaurant. Many restaurants add a discretionary service charge of 12.5 percent automatically. Check your bill before adding extra. Discretionary means you can ask to have it removed if service was poor.

Since 1 October 2024, the Employment (Allocation of Tips) Act 2023 requires UK employers to pass 100 percent of qualifying tips and service charges to workers, without deductions. Card tips and pooled tips are covered. Cash tips handed directly to a server are typically the server's to keep.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip at a restaurant in the UK?

In the UK, tipping is optional but customary for good service. A standard tip is 10 to 12.5 percent, with 15 percent for excellent service at a smart restaurant. Many restaurants add a 12.5 percent service charge automatically. Check your bill before adding extra. You can legally refuse a discretionary service charge if service was poor.

Do tips legally have to go to staff in the UK?

Yes. Since 1 October 2024, the Employment (Allocation of Tips) Act 2023 requires UK employers to pass 100 percent of qualifying tips and service charges to workers, with no deductions. This applies to card tips and pooled tips. Cash tips handed directly to a server are typically theirs to keep.

How do I split a bill unevenly?

This calculator splits evenly. For uneven splits, calculate the total with tip first using this tool, then divide manually. Add up everyone's individual orders, calculate the tip percentage on the full total, then add each person's proportional share of the tip to their subtotal.

About

splitmybill.co.uk is a free UK bill splitter and tip calculator. It is built for the specific needs of UK diners: discretionary tips at the UK-standard rates of 10%, 12.5%, 15%, and 20%, with the option to remove a service charge that has already been added. The tool splits the total — including any tip — equally across any number of people and shows what each person owes to the nearest penny, rounded in the standard UK convention. All calculations run in your browser; nothing is sent to a server.

The tool was built because existing bill-splitter apps are either too complex, require account sign-up, or default to US tipping norms (15–25%) that do not reflect UK restaurant culture. splitmybill.co.uk does one job and does it correctly for UK users. All calculations happen in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server.

For guidance only. Tipping is optional. UK law on tips, service charges and tronc systems is complex. For tax or employment questions, speak to HMRC or ACAS.
